History of Notre Dame Cathedral
Not only is Notre Dame one of Paris' most famous landmarks, but it is also one of its oldest. Construction of the Parisian cathedral began in 1163 and finished in 1345. Subsequent centuries saw various additions as well as repairs following natural disasters and vandalism, particularly following the Hugenot riots of the 1580s.
Notre Dame de Paris has also played an important role in more recent centuries, with the tolling of its great bell Emmanuel signifying the liberation of France in August 1944 during the Second World War.
