Riga Central Market

Explore Europe's largest market and bazaar, housed in an impressive 20th century building made from old German Zeppelin hangars. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998, along with the rest of Riga's historic old town, the five pavilions of Riga Central Market are an iconic sight along the Riga skyline.

Every day between 80 to 100 thousand locals and tourists visit the market, to pick up fresh local produce grown and reared by Latvian farmers.

Exploring Riga Central Market
Planning for Riga Central Market began in 1922, and the Neoclassical building with Art Deco elements was erected from 1924-30. An instant hit with locals, it was estimated that at one time 50 per cent of all foodstuffs sold in Riga came from the central market.

As the largest market in Europe, Riga Central Market spans 72,300 square meters and hosts 3,000 trade stands, selling a huge variety of vegetables, dairy, meat, fish and groceries. Today the market remains popular with visitors thanks to its strict quality controls, low prices and the vast choice of produce it offers.

Visiting Riga Central Market
The market opens each day from 7am until 6pm, where visitors can pick up handmade crafts and locally-made gifts from the endless rows of stalls.
