Riga Cathedral

Back in the medieval period, Riga Cathedral, or Rigas Doms, as it has historically been referred to, was the star of the Baltics, being the largest in Latvia and the region. These days, it is the main Evangelical Lutheran cathedral in the city as well as home to Riga’s Archbishop.

Visiting Riga’s cathedral in the old Town
Wherever you are in Riga, you will be able to spot the tip of Riga Cathedral peeping up above the buildings. If you look closely, you can notice a harmony of Romanic, Early Gothic, Baroque and Art Nouveau styles, making Riga Cathedral a fascinating study of history through design and architecture styles.

As well as serving a religious function, Riga Cathedral also plays host to musical concerts. This is thanks to its fantastic acoustics, its central location in the Old Town and its legendary organ. The organ has 6,768 pipes, 116 voices and 124 stops – making it one of the biggest in Europe. If you’re lucky, you might even catch an exclusive performance by The Riga Dom Cathedral Boys Choir who has sung all over the world.

While in the Old Town, visitors should also pay a visit to another historical gem nearby: The 800 year old baroque St Peters Church.
