Malta is steeped in history and visitors to this beautiful Mediterranean island will find many fascinating historic sites to explore.
The history of Malta dates back to about 5000 BC, when travellers from the nearby Sicily travelled to the island and established a settlement there. These first inhabitants lived in caves and lived off of the land, but later generations began to construct stone buildings, the remains of which can be seen on the island today.
Discover more about the history of Malta
Over the centuries, Malta has been ruled by the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Arabs, the French, the Turkish and the British, all of whom left their mark on the island’s culture and architecture. Unfortunately, Malta suffered heavy bombing during World War II and visitors to the island can still see signs of this dark period of its history, such as the air raid shelters in Mellieha.
Malta gained independence from Britain in 1974 and Sir Anthony Mamo became the first Maltese President of what then became known as the Republic of Malta.
