Museum of Anatolian Civilizations

The Museum of Anatolian Civilizations houses one of the best collections of artefacts in the region and some of the finest surviving Hittite treasures. Located just to the south of Ankara Castle, it is a previous winner of the 'European Museum of the Year' prize and continues to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

The Museum of Anatolian Civilizations has been located in its current form since 1968, with its exhibitions spread across two 15th Ottoman buildings. The museum displays collections dating from throughout the region's history, ranging from the Palaeolithic Age of 10,000 years ago to the Classical Period.

One of the most popular items in the Anatolian Civilizations Museum's collection is its wall paintings from Çatalhöyük. The images are some of the most important in Turkey and date from one of the world's first known stationary societies.

The museum is also rich in Hittite exhibits, with the statue of the God of War from the King's Gate fortifications in Hattusha one of the most famous. Other attractions in the collection include bronze statues of the Hittite fertility god as well as a series of bull and deer carvings.
