Basel enjoys some of the hottest weather in Switzerland, and there is no better place to enjoy it than in in the city’s botanical gardens, Merian Park.
The residents can thank Christoph Merian for the park. He lent the park’s land and buildings to the city in 1968, so that everyone could enjoy the plants and flowers in this lovely 33 acre haven.
Merian Park is easy to get to by tram or by car and can be reached from the centre of Basel and the Radisson Blu hotel, Basel, which is just ten minutes away.
Enjoying nature in Basel, Switzerland
Nature lovers will love visiting the bee and butterfly houses, spotting rabbits or sheep and exploring the herb garden. For another dose of nature in the heart of Basel, parkgoers can round their day off with a trip to the Basel Zoo, which is just a short tram ride away.
Merian Park is very child friendly. The grass is ideal for playing games and children can’t help falling in love with the gargantuan dinosaur statue which locals have affectionately named Dino.
And if the park air starts to make visitors get peckish, they can have coffee and cake in the Café Merian - Christoph Merian’s summer residence before he opened it to the public.
