Alexanderplatz in Berlin

Alexanderplatz in Berlin is a central square in the eastern part of the city, named after the Russian Tsar Alexander I. Known locally as ‘Alex’ by Berlin citizens, the square was reconstructed in 1969 by the socialistic government. It then played a central location for demonstrations and political events. The highlight of the square is the People’s fountain and the Urania World Clock which is ten metres high. The clock displays the local time of 148 cities around the world and is a visitor attraction in itself.

Visitors are drawn to Berlin’s Alexanderplatz for the many shopping opportunities. The square is also home to one of Berlin’s most visited sights, the Television Tower. The tower is with 368 metres the highest construction in Germany, and is further one of the tallest free-standing buildings in Europe. The Television Tower not only broadcasts TV and radio channels, it also has an observation deck offering fantastic views far beyond the famous Brandenburg Gate and the city’s borders.

Take time to explore more of Berlin and stroll from Alexanderplatz along Unter den Linden Boulevard to Brandenburg Gate. The Brandenburg Gate is a must see sight, especially at night time when it is fully illuminated.
