Cologne Cathedral

The Gothic-style Cologne Cathedral dominates the skyline and is a must-see attraction for anyone visiting the city. Officially known as the High Cathedral of St. Peter, this house of God is the second tallest building in Cologne and is visited by thousands of people each day. This wonderful structure was hit 14 times by large areal bombs during the Second World War meaning it had to go under reconstruction. This new restoration period saw the use of modern techniques, which you may be able to spot when gazing upon its walls.

The cathedral is located in the Old Town, in the heart of the city. This stunning building dates back as far as the 13th century, although it was not completed until the 19th century. The church is the city’s most famous landmark and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Take a guided tour of its walls and climb the 533 steps to the top of the South Tower for spectacular views of the city and beyond to the Rhine. You could also venture down into the crypt to discover the Treasure Chamber, where chalices, crosses and religious works of art are on display. The cathedral also contains the Shrine of the Three Holy Kings – a medieval golden reliquary, said to contain the relics of the Magi, Caspar, Balthazar and Melchior.

If you are visiting during the Christmas holidays then be sure to check out the wonderful sight of the cathedral rising up above the markets at nighttime. Lights from the stalls brighten up the sky making a breathtaking background to your photos.
