Sabiha Gokcen Airport

Sabiha Gokcen Airport is one of the two major international airports servicing Istanbul, just 35km from the city centre. The city’s main airport, Istanbul Atatürk Airport, quickly reached full capacity, and the decision was taken to build a new airport on the Asian southeast side of the city. As part of an overall development plan, the airport is to become part of an industry park and has the capacity to receive 25 million passengers through its doors each year.

The airport serves many destinations throughout Europe and the Middle East, as well as the domestic market. In 2010, this award-winning airport was voted the world’s best airport at the World Low Cost Airlines Congress in London, quite an accreditation.

Airport Services during Transit
With shops, restaurants and cafes servicing Sabiha Gokcen Airport 365 days a year, there is plenty to keep you entertained during transit, both in departures and arrivals. Major outlets with designer and high street brands sell clothing, shoes and jewellery. There are also plenty of gift shops to purchase any last minute Turkish souvenirs as well as pharmacies and of course Duty Free stores throughout the airport.

Who was Sabiha Gokcen?
Sabiha Gokcen (1913) shared her adoptive father’s love for aviation. He, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, was an officer in the Ottoman Military and a revolutionary statesman that went on to become the First President of Turkey. Sabiha, aged just 23, first completed her pilots licence before honing her skills at Eskişehir Airbase. She went on to fly fighter and bomber planes for the 1st Aircraft Regiment, making her the world’s first female fighter pilot. Shortly after she was called to serve for her county and became Turkey’s first female combat pilot. Her knowledge was passed on and she became an inspiration to others when she later took the role of Chief Trainer at Türkkuşu Flight School of Turkish Aeronautical Association. Her legacy could not have been better remembered, than to have one of Istanbul’s two major International Airports named after her.

Sabiha Gokcen Airport is conveniently situated 3 km from the Radisson Blu Hotel & Spa, Istanbul Tulza, making it the perfect choice for an airport stop-over, or a starting point to a fantastic Istanbul or Turkish holiday.
