The Hagia Sophia Museum has a long history, dating back to the 6th century when it was originally built as a Greek Orthodox Church. In the following centuries, it converted to a Roman Catholic Church, reverted to Greek Orthodox then became a mosque. Since 1935, it has served as a secular museum and symbol of Istanbul. The Hagia Sophia achieved UNESCO World Heritage recognition in 1985.
