
Responsible Business - Let's take responsibility
Taking responsibility for the environment and local community has been an important part of the broader commitment of the Rezidor Hotel Group to sustainable development for many years. In 2001, this commitment was fortified and placed within the scope of a programme called Responsible Business (RB).
Each hotel has a unique RB Action Plan covering areas such as community outreach, cultural heritage, children’s rights, environmental improvement, employee well-being and health and safety. The hotels are engaged with both local charity groups and the corporate international charity organisation recognised by the Rezidor Hotel Group, the World Childhood Foundation. The mission of Childhood is to defend the rights of the child and to promote better living conditions for vulnerable and exploited children at risk all over the world.
The hotel stands out among resorts in Kuwait for its promotion of RB activities, including social, environmental and cultural responsibility.
Environmentally friendly initiatives:
- Annual international event “Earth Hour” to raise awareness about protecting the climate
- Dedicated garden and staff accommodation designed to promote a green environment
- Hotel power consumption reduced by 8%
Social, cultural and community outreach:
- Annual art competition among 300 students from 40 local schools sponsored for the past 13 years
- Blood donation drive twice yearly in cooperation with the Ministry of Health
- Children’s cooking classes
- Management training for six local Kuwaiti university students
- Jazz festival in association with Kuwait Philharmonic
Health, safety and security initiatives:
- Bi-annual fun run for club members and staff
- Dedicated fire fighting and first aid team
- Healthy food options through the Food for Thought programme featured in all on-site restaurants
- Extensive gym facility at the staff accommodation
- No smoking at the all-day restaurant during breakfast
- Increase in number of non-smoking rooms to 60%
Staff involvement:
- Living Responsible programme training for all employees
- Recycling of printers, papers and batteries
- Staff donation of clothes for victims of the Philippine typhoon
Achievements:
- Sponsorship of a Girgean buffet during Ramadan for children hospitalized at Faisal Bin Sultan Cancer Hospital
- Donation of more than EUR 5500 to the World Childhood Foundation through ongoing RB activities
Guests can participate by:
- Depositing used batteries in the recycling box in the business centre
- Making charitable donations to support the less-privileged
- Participating in the hotel’s blood donation campaign
- Placing towels back on the rack for re-use
