Responsible Business – Let’s take responsibility

Taking responsibility for the environment and local community has been an important part of the Rezidor Hotel Group’s broader commitment to sustainable development for many years. In 2001, this commitment was fortified and placed within the scope of a programme called Responsible Business (RB). Each hotel has a unique RB Action Plan covering areas such as community outreach, cultural heritage, employee and children’s rights, health and safety, as well as environmental improvements. Our hotels are engaged with both local charity groups and Rezidor’s corporate international charity organisation, the World Childhood Foundation. The mission of Childhood is to defend the rights of the child and to promote better living conditions for vulnerable and exploited children at risk all over the world. Below are some of the RB activities and achievements of this hotel.

Environmental Friendly Initiatives / Activities

• Active participation in the annual International event ‘Earth Hour’to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change. The power consumption of the hotel has been reduced by 8% compared to last year.
• Dedicated garden in staff accommodations to encourage a green & clean environment

• Blood donation drive organised by the hotel, twice a year in coordination with the Ministry of Health
• Management training provided for 6 Kuwaiti (local) students from a local university in Kuwait
• Children's cooking classes & Jazz festival organized in association with Kuwait Philharmonic of Kuwait to spread the cultural awareness
• Annual Art Competition for students involving 40 local schools and more than 300 students to develop local talents – a yearly event for the last 13 years

Health, Safety & Security Initiatives

• Bi-Annual fun run organized for the club members and staff.... a friendly race to create awareness for a healthy lifestyle
• Converted the breakfast in the All Day Restaurant into a complete non-smoking area at breakfast time
• Increased non-smoking rooms from 50% to 60% in the hotel
• Extensive gym facility at the staff accommodation
• Comprehensive Fire Fighting safety measures with dedicated Fire Fighting & First Aid team members
• Food For Thought programme in all Restaurants enabling guests to have a wide choice of healthy food items

Staff Involvement

• All employees undergo the dedicated Living Responsible Business Programme
• Ongoing recycling programme in the back of house areas to minimise the use of printers, recycle papers, batteries etc.
• A shipment of clothes was organised by staff and donated to victims of  the typhoon in Philippines

Awards and Achievements

• ‘Girgean’ buffet was sponsored by the hotel for the hospitalized children at the Faisal Bin Sultan Cancer Hospital during Ramadan
• In 2009 alone; the hotel has collected more than 5500 Euros for the World Childhood Foundation through the ongoing Living Responsible Business (RB) activities

How can you take part in our RB Activities?

• Towel Replacement Programme - should you wish to reuse your towel, simply place it on the rack, and thus help conserve water.
• Battery Recycling Programme –  the batteries can be placed in the box at the Business Centre
• Participate in our blood donation campaign
