The brainchild of founder Husain Marafie, Al Boom is named after the largest class of dhows that once populated the ancient Gulf waters in days gone by. This landlocked vessel that houses the restaurant was impeccably constructed following the original 1915 blueprints of Marafie’s grandfather’s famed Mohammedi I, the largest dhow ever built.

Forged by hand by shipbuilders and master craftsmen in Calicut, India, this vessel took 15 years to complete. It was finally finished in 1979, in time for the opening of the Radisson Blu Hotel in 1980. A total of 35,000 man hours went into the ship's construction, with meticulous care put in to every detail. Materials include 8,800 handmade iron nails, 17,500 cubic feet of the finest teak and 2.5 tons of copper, hinting at the magnitude of this magnificent task.
