About Lagos
Lagos was originally called Eko, which means "cassava farm." It was founded by the royal family of Benin City. Modern-day Lagos was founded by Portugal in the 16th century and was a major centre for slave trade and ivory and pepper sales until 1851, when Great Britain captured the city, abolishing the slave trade and the exporting of food crops. Lagos was formally annexed as a British colony in 1861.
