About Lagos
Lagos was originally called Eko, which means "cassava farm." It was founded by the royal family that came from Benin City. Modern-day Lagos was founded by Portugal in the 16th century and was a major centre for slave trade and selling ivory and peppers until 1851, when Great Britain captured the city, abolishing slave trade and the exporting of food crops. Lagos was formally annexed as a British Colony on 6 August, 1861. Victoria Island is the business district and economic centre of Lagos, and the area is popular for restaurants, shopping, business, embassies, residences and nightlife.
