Lagos Lagoon

If you're looking to spend some time outside of the hustle and bustle of Lagos city centre on your holiday, why not explore the Lagos Lagoon? The lagoon lies on the eastern side of the city itself and is encircled by the local road network.

Lagos Lagoon runs alongside the city and stretches out east as far as Epe. The lagoon measures over 50 kilometres long and varies in width from 3 to 13 kilometres. It is separated from the nearby Atlantic Ocean by a lengthy sand spit and the wetlands at the Lekki Conservation Centre.

Discover the wilderness surrounding Lagos Lagoon
Taking its name from the Portuguese word for 'Lake', the Lagos Lagoon is connected to the Lekki Lagoon by a channel that passes the town of Epe. The Lagoon then empties into the Atlantic Ocean at Lagos Harbour.

The city of Lagos itself stretches alongside the lagoon for more than 30 km, from the harbour to the northern suburbs. Near to the harbour is a large tract of wetlands where you can find the Lekki Conservation Centre. Visit the centre to see some of the exotic wildlife that inhabits the lagoon including crocodiles, monkeys and hundreds of species of birds.
