Enjoy the sounds of summer with performances from world-class orchestras and performers at the Lucerne Festival.
The internationally recognised concert series draws visitors from all over the world to Switzerland who come to enjoy the orchestras and soloists at Lucerne Festival.
Since its inaugural concert, the Lucerne Festival has expanded to include events in the spring and fall, each with its own unique focus for visitors to enjoy.
History of the Lucerne Festival
Founded in 1938, the Lucerne Festival began as a small concert series performed in the gardens of Wagner's villa. Conducted by Arturo Toscanini, he assembled a festival orchestra comprising musicians and soloists from other orchestras in the area.
However during the war, the Lucerne Festival attracted musicians and festival goers reluctant to perform or attend similar events in Austria and Germany during Nazi occupation.
Today, visitors at the Lucerne Festival can enjoy performances by the festival's resident orchestra, along with special events with prestigious visiting orchestras. Past performers have included the Berlin Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic.
