Masmak Citadel in Riyadh

The Masmak Citadel sits proudly on the highest hill in Amman, Jebel al-Qala'a, and has historically played a vital role in Riyadh as the city’s fortress against invaders. It is widely regarded as Riyadh’s most significant monument.

Riyadh’s history
The Masmak Citadel once belonged to the ruling Al Saud clan before it was snatched from them and taken over by another family. In remained in their hands until 1902, when a young Amir Adb al-Aziz ibn Adb al-Rahman recaptured it and re-established his clan’s supremacy.

A trip to Riyadh wouldn’t be complete without experiencing market life at one of the colourful souks. Just a few minutes from the Masmak Citadel is the Batha Souk. Visitors should leave room in their suitcase to fill it with exquisite pashminas, rugs and gold which can all be found here.

The fort was made using clay and brick, features four watchtowers, a mosque and a small museum housing historic weaponry and artefacts. Thanks to a sympathetic restoration in the 1980s, the Masmak Citadel is remarkably well preserved and has become one of Riyadh’s most popular tourist attractions.
