Visiting the Ivan Vazov National Theatre
When founded in 1904 it was called the National Theatre but after some time it was named after the eminent Bulgarian writer Ivan Vazov. Designed by famous theatre architects from Vienna, Hermann Helmer and Ferdinand Fellner, the Neoclassical building of the theatre was finished in 1906 and opened in 1907. As a part of the National Theatre a theatrical school was established in 1925.
The magnificent building is home to three separate performance spaces, the largest of which can accommodate 750 local and tourist theatre goers. The Ivan Vasov National Theatre's smaller rooms seat 120 and 70 people respectively and act as the perfect venue for more intimate shows.
The Ivan Vazov National Theatre is famous across the country for staging some of the finest opera in Sofia. Attracting the best Bulgarian and international stars, directors such as Lilia Abadjieva have graced the main stage with their productions.
