Fraumunster Zurich

The slender blue spire of the Fraumunster is one of the most elegant sights in Zurich. With a history stretching back more than a thousand years, this sacred building offers an incredible insight into the past of Switzerland's largest city.

The Fraumunster is one of Zurich's premier tourist attractions and one of the many exceptional sites which give the city its distinctive atmosphere. For exceptional levels of comfort and service, the Radisson Blu Hotel, Zurich Airport is one of the top choices in the thriving city. From this chic and stylish hotel Zurich, and its many attractions, are within easy reach.

A royal lineage
Founded by King Louis the German in 853, the Fraumunster was originally an abbey attached to a convent which many female members of the European aristocracy frequented over the years. Visitors can see the remains of this ancient building in the crypt beneath the main structure, which dates from around 1250.

When the Reformation swept through Switzerland, led largely from the nearby Grossmunster church, the convent was shut down and the Fraumunster was repurposed for the new religious movement. It has been a centre of worship all through its history, and still draws many visitors intrigued by the colourful story of European Christianity.

Beautiful sights in an ancient church
During the 20th century the Fraumunster has been extensively renovated leaving the mark of modernity on the ancient building. Inside visitors will be stunned by graceful frescoes and two excellent sets of stain-glassed windows, one designed by Giacometti in the 1940s and the other, a masterpiece by Marc Chagall designed in 1970.

Sitting on the banks of the Limmat River, the Fraumunster is one of the most arresting sites in the Zurich Old Town and history lovers will find themselves spoiled during the trip. It is one of the city's premier locations and well worth a visit during a stay in the first class Radisson Blu Hotel, Zurich Airport.
