Mythical origins and groundbreaking events
Legend has it that the construction of the Grossmunster was ordered by the renowned medieval ruler Charlemagne after his horse halted on the burial site of three early Christian martyrs. The distinctive Romanesque building, with its distinctive towers, was completed by 1230 and dedicated to the three, who were called Felix, Regulus and Exuperantius.

The Grossmunster was a centre of Catholic worship until the 16th century when one of the great leaders of the Protestant Reformation movement took to the pulpit. Huldrych Zwingili preached the new ideas in the Grossmunster for 12 years, turning Zurich into one of Europe's major religious centre, attracting scholars and theologians from across the area.

A window on Zurich
The two towers that dominate the Grossmunster are among the most recognisable sights in Zurich, but these features shouldn't be appreciated from the outside alone. Visitors will find that ascending the 200 steps of the north tower offers spectacular views of Zurich, including a fantastic look at the similarly impressive Fraumunster Church across the Limmat River.
