Vaasa is a sunny coastal town in Ostrobothnia, where urban life and archipelago idyll are nicely intertwined. Vaasa offers a wealth of cultural experiences, and the Kvarken archipelago spreading in front of the city offers fascinating nature experiences.

The location of Vaasa on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia, at its narrowest point only 80 miles by sea from Sweden, has made it an important port city. Over the centuries, Vaasa has been governed under the auspices of three countries – Sweden, Russia and finally Finland – and the city’s unique culture therefore includes influences from various countries. Charles IX founded, in 1606, the town of Korsholm, which was named Vaasa after the ruling dynasty in 1611. In 1855-1917 Vaasa was called Nikolaistad (Nicholas City) after Tsar Nicholas I. After Finland gained her independence in 1917, the name Vaasa was restored.

Until 1852, the town of Vaasa was located where Old Vaasa now stands. In that year, there was a serious fire in the town. Most of the buildings erected in 1300-1800 were destroyed. Ruins of several buildings, such as St. Mary's Church, are still visible in Old Vaasa. Buildings saved from the fire include Korsholm Church and Old Vaasa Museum.

In addition to historical sites Vaasa is full of parks and green spaces. The parks and fitness trails flanking the shoreline are popular outdoor recreation areas and a reminder of the city’s proximity to the sea. Within a short walk from the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, you can admire the area’s archipelago idyll and unique nature, which are part of the world’s cultural heritage.

Vaasa has an active cultural life. The city's theatres offer comedy classics, stories and battles for the entire family throughout the year. On display in Vaasa’s museums is everything from modern art to local Ostrobothnian art. Vaasa’s music scene is characterised by different choirs and, in particular, the city’s jazz venues. On your trip to Vaasa, stay at the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel. The hotel’s Magic Beds® and Super Breakfast® guarantee you a refreshing trip to one of the sunniest cities in Finland.
