Winterfest in Riga

Every winter since 1975, musicians from across the globe descend upon Riga for its biggest, brightest and most loved music festival: Winterfest. From November to February, residents and visitors can enjoy a series of concerts, which celebrate the season’s major festivals like Christmas, New Year, the Orthodox Church’s Christmas in January and anniversary of Herman Braun Foundation in February.

There’s a concert for everyone: at Winterfest choirs, opera stars, jazz bands, chamber music orchestras, soloists and respected maestros come together to wow the crowds.

Experiencing Riga’s music scene
It’s become something of a tradition for Bach’s Weihnachtoratorium and Händel’s Messiah to be performed at Winterfest, and the special Christmas charity concert is one of the highlights of the festival. Here you can expect to see big stars like pianist Martha Argerich, popular guitar duo the Katona Twins, Latvian violinist Gidon Kremer and the Kremerata Baltica Chamber orchestra.

Many of the performances at the festival are held at the Riga Opera House. The venue dates back to 1863 and is worth visiting in itself to drink in its sumptuous gold and red interior which provides the perfect setting for Winterfest’s finest to perform. You can find the opera house in the historic Old Town, which UNESCO has recognised as a World Heritage Site.
