A history of Vienna State Opera
The Vienna State Opera building opened in 1869. Its first performance was Mozart's Don Juan and the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth both attended. Originally named the Vienna Court Opera (Wiener Hofoper), it was renamed Vienna State Opera in 1920 at the beginning of the Austrian Republic.
Between 1938 and 1945, the opera house suffered terrible repression under the Nazis and was damaged during a bombing in March 1945. However, in May 1945, reconstruction on the Vienna State Opera began. In 1955, the new building opened and the rebirth marked by a performance of Beethoven's Fidelio.
Today, the Vienna State Opera is considered one of the world's greatest opera houses and has been under the direction of Dominique Meyer since 2010.
