Adopt a School Program and Other Community Projects
As part of our commitment to the local community, Radisson Blu Resort recently launched our ‘Adopt a School’ program, with the aim to raise $50,000 over a 12 month period. We have specifically chosen Nadi District and Ratu Navula as the two schools we will be adopting as a large share of our staff’s and land owning communities children attend these two schools. It also has a very popular Hospitality vocational program which will allow us to focus some additional assistance in directly impacting the training and equipment of our potential workforce. The Adopt a school program is focused on making the biggest impact we can with the funds we are raising, with a focus on sanitation, equipment required to teach the curriculum such as computers and materials, scholarships and various pieces of technology to ensure the children are getting the best possible education. Mr Paul Halford Radisson Blu’s Hotel Manager and the Responsible Business committee wanted to ensure the funds raised would impact most of the children. We wanted this as a long term project and all funds would be spent through the resort for the benefit of the schools with checks in place to ensure the equipment is well looked after and maintained. We have sought the schools input and met with the appropriate parties to ensure that what we are keen to assist with is actually what they need. Fundraising events that we currently run include our weekly Duck Derby race and our weekly school tour. Both are designed to raise funds and increase the awareness of our guests on the disparity between the schools in Fiji and Australia and New Zealand.
Mr Halford says, "The team met with the schools at the end of this year to discuss what the funds already raised would be best spent; the resort is proud of the fact that $10,000 has already been raised to start the process."
A list of things were discussed and we have achieved the following so far:
- The renovation of toilet block ensuring good sanitary conditions
- 20 computers and required servers
- Library books
- New or repaired water tanks for clean fresh water for the children to drink.
- Text books for the junior and senior students
The Adopt A School program will be our number one priority community project for 2013 and our expectations are to raise $50K.
Other projects the Resort supports include Lautoka Aged Care and Navita, and we regularly provide food and clothing. Recently, the Nawai Junior school reached out to the hotel to support a new roof for the school. It was joyous day when this was completed.
