Helsinki's largest zoo can be found on its own island in the city called Korkeasaari. Keepers of the Helsinki Zoo have organised a collection of the world's most exotic animals for guests to visit on the island.
Korkeasaari can be a great day out for the family while on holiday in Helsinki. Guests can reach the zoo easily from the city centre, especially when staying at the centrally located Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, Helsinki. This hotel in Helsinki has excellent transit links across the city, putting the best of Finland at your doorstep.
Take a walk on the wild side at Korkeasaari
Helsinki's zoo, Korkeasaari, features around 1,000 different species of plants and 150 different types of animals. The species come from all over the world, meaning guests to Korkeasaari can experience the animals of the Arctic tundra one minute and forage through rainforest the next. In addition, the zoo has animals of all sizes, from insects to Wisent, a European bison.
Korkeasaari also has a number of animals under great threat and works to preserve the existence of these creatures. The amur leopard calls Korkeasaari home, of which there are only about 30 left in the wild, and the blue-throated macaw, with only a few hundred left in the wild, has found refuge at Helsinki Zoo.
Summer will be the best time to visit Korkeasaari, given the increased daylight and operating hours; however, the zoo does have limited winter hours.
