Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, Helsinki

The Radisson Blu Royal Hotel is celebrating its anniversary year by honouring its traditions and creating new ones. The hotel was opened 20 years ago in June, as Royal Hotel. Upon its completion in 1991, this architecturally modern hotel building was one of the landmarks of Helsinki, and it still is today. The building was designed by renowned architect Ilmo Valjakka. The hotel director at the time encouraged Valjakka to be creative and practical in the plans. Other issues to be considered were the look of the international hotel chain as well as the wide-ranging client base and their needs. With these guidelines, Valjakka created a grand building that attracts praise inside and out. Many noteworthy Finnish designers, such as Ilmari Tapiovaara, Yrjö Kukkapuro and Nina Kellokoski, are together responsible for the stylish interior and the high-quality materials used.
