Short text

CASPAR WOLF
Summiteer  between enlightenment and romanticism
Coinciding with the Kirkeby show, museum kunst palast will be holding an exhibition of numerous paintings and prints by the Swiss artist Caspar Wolf (1735-1783), whom Kirkeby described as one of his "old favourites". The two artists are united across the centuries by their common interest in geology.
This shared interest explains the amazing similarities between Wolf's free sketches and studies and Kirkeby's paintings.
Caspar Wolf is considered to have discovered the Alps, particularly its high peaks, for Swiss art, and is regarded as an important representative of the period between the Enlightenment and Romanticism. He accompanied geographers, geologists, botanists and glaciologists on their exhibitions into the mountains.
Unlike his predecessors, Wolf did not paint idealised mountains from the distance, but after his own studies which he had drawn himself in the mountains.
His superbly painted pictures show his unique affinity to nature among the high peaks, while at the same time documenting their discovery by scientists.

PER KIRKEBY
Retrospective in cooperation with Tate Modern, London
Born in 1938, Per Kirkeby is the best known Danish artist of his generation and one of the most influential artists of our time. Following a degree in geology and several expeditions to Greenland in the 1950s and early 1960s, Kirkeby began to paint. Later, he also embarked on writing and sculpture. Kirkeby's art is preoccupied with the relationship between man and nature.
Per Kirkeby reflects the tensions of this relation in different media and from various perspectives. The romantic experience of nature as sublime is shattered against the many mirrors of Kirkeby's multifaceted, crystalline œuvre. 78 paintings as well as sculptures, drawings, watercolours, collages, paintings
on square masonite panels and artist's books will be on view.
The exhibition was organized by Tate Modern, London, in cooperation with Museum Kunst Palast. Several works have been added for the Düsseldorf venue.
The exhibition is under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Benedikte of Denmark.
