Meskel Square

Visit the Meskel Square and discover the vibrant beating heart of Addis Ababa. The central square plays a prominent role in Ethiopia's capital city and is a popular meeting point for both visitors and locals throughout the year. The square is also a site for public gatherings and demonstrations, as well as the famous Meskel Festival, which takes place annually in September. Thanks to its central location, it is also accessible for visiting many of the city's most prominent businesses, shops and points of interest, such as the National Museum.

The Meskel Festival

The Meskel Festival, from which the square takes its name, has been celebrated in Ethiopia for more than 1,600 years. Meskel means 'cross' and commemorates the discovery of the True Cross by Empress Helena of Constantinople and the beginning of spring with its distinctive yellow daisies. Each year, thousands of people gather on September 27 to take part in the festival, which begins in the early afternoon and carries on through the night until dawn the following day. The square is decorated for the occasion with beautiful yellow daisies and a large pyramid stands in the center of it all. A large procession led by brightly colored priests, brass bands and students takes place before the lighting of the pyramid, a ritual that continues overnight.
