A rich film scene

With a city so rich in culture, it is no surprise that Amsterdam boasts a rich film industry with great events and festivals throughout the year.

The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam

The IDFA is one of the largest documentary film festivals in the world, bringing in over 2,500 international documentary professionals to discuss, screen and talk about the films and the industry. IDFA usually takes place around November each year.

Amsterdam Film Festival

The Amsterdam Film Festival is a cutting-edge cultural event, and although held virtually, it has a large impact on the Dutch capital. Established in 2010, it accepts submissions online, celebrating movies and directors from over 90 countries. Over the years, it has developed into one of Europe's most exciting artistic celebrations.

Placing an emphasis on cinematic artistry and progressive techniques, this film festival has helped foster emerging talent since its inception. It runs competitions in all kinds of cinematic categories such as, documentaries, short film, feature-length films and it even caters for music videos.

From West Beach to the World

While the IDFA is certainly the largest film event held in the city, there are many more film festivals to choose from throughout the year.

Enjoy an outdoor screening at World Cinema Amsterdam in Vondelpark’s Open Air theatre, or attend the West Beach Film Festival in Niew-West next to the Sloterplasbad swimming pool. Animation lovers should check out the KLIK! Amsterdam Animation festival for screenings, masterclasses, special guests and parties, all taking place at the EYE film institute.
