Ankara Opera House - known as Opera Sahnesi in Turkish - is the biggest venue for opera and ballet in Turkey, followed by Leyla Gencer Sahnesi and Operet Sahnesi. Turkish architect Sevki Balmumcu designed the building after winning a competition to create it in 1933.
Initially built as an exhibition centre, it became Ankara Opera House in 1948. A statue of the great Turkish actor Cüneyt Gökçer, who died in 2009, welcomes visitors to the facility.
Operated by Turkish State Opera and Ballet, Ankara Opera House also plays host to theatre productions by Turkish State Theatres. As a result, it attracts a varied group of arts lovers to Turkey’s capital city.
