Ankara 19 Mayis Stadium

Football is the most popular sport in Turkey and is a way of life in it's capital city. The Ankara 19 Mayis Stadium is the home of the Turkish capital's three main teams and the sporting heart for their fans. Named after the day Mustafa Kemal Atatürk began the Turkish War of Independence in Samsun, the stadium is currently the 13th largest in the country. It was originally constructed in 1935 and can hold close to 20,000 fans in its five stands during match days. Here football fans gather to celebrate the sport and cheer on their favorite team as they battle their opponent on the grassy field.

Ankara football

The 19 Mayis Stadium is home to three teams that play at the stadium. They all compete at different levels in the national leagues and the most famous team is Gençlerbirliği S.K, nicknamed "The Poppies" due to their home colors of black and red. They have been the most successful in Ankara having won the Turkish Cup twice and reaching the UEFA Cup in 2004. They also play in the Ankara Süper Lig (Super League).

Getting to the arena

Ankara 19 Mayis Stadium is situated in one of the most convenient locations. If you're walking you are only minutes away from the historic city center and railway station. Those traveling by car can use one of the various highways passing by and there are also several bus routes to the stadium. Using the metro you can get off at the Ulus station.
