Basel: Trips to the cultural capital of Switzerland
Water fountains spray into the air, and everything rattles and moves. The playful machine sculptures by Swiss artist Jean Tinguely in the Fasnacht fountain in Theaterplatz, Basel never rest. The fountain is one of the city’s landmarks and is a must-see on any trip to Basel. Another landmark is the cathedral in the Old Town with its Romanesque and Gothic styles. The bustling city unifies beautifully preserved buildings from the 15th century with modern architecture. Internationally renowned architects such as Mario Botta, Renzo Piano or the architect duo Duke & de Meuron have enriched the city. Over 30 museums exhibit art and culture from all eras, such as the Kunstmuseum Basel or the Fondation Beyeler with modern works including Cézanne, van Gogh, Klee, Miró and Warhol.
Besides the aforementioned Tinguely fountain, Basel’s Old Town, Kunstmuseum (art museum) and Fondation Beyeler, a sightseeing trip would not be complete without the market place and its town hall, the Mittlere Brücke (central bridge), the Spalentor (city gate), the sculpture “Hammering Man” by J. Borofsky and Basel Zoo. Also worth recommending are tours around the Old Town and to architecturally interesting buildings, as are ferry trips between the Rhine bridges. For those with more time on their hands, the city can be explored from the water on a trip through the locks to Rheinfelden or a harbor cruise down to the Dreiländereck (border triangle region). Daily excursions to the Jura Mountains, Alsace or to South Baden offer exciting alternatives.
