Picturesque Piazza Square
Piazza Square may seem like something straight out of Venice, but its location in central Batumi makes it a unique experience. Take in the sights of the 5,700-square-meter plaza from one of the many cafés or restaurants surrounding the square, or enjoy concerts and cultural events by major international artists.
Characteristic architectureConstruction of the square was completed in 2010 as part of the rehabilitation program for the historical districts of Batumi. The mastermind behind the Italian-inspired piazza is Georgian architect Vazha Orbeladze. Surrounding the square is the Piazza complex, home to many restaurants and cafés serving both local and international food.
Sit down at one of the many restaurants on the square, such as Mimino, named after the famous Soviet comedy, where they serve a mix of both traditional and modern Georgian cuisine. Alternatively, try Café La Brioche, which is home to many outdoor concerts during the summer months, where the traveler with a sweet tooth can find a personal favorite among their 30 desserts.
Local scenePiazza Square has truly begun to make a name for itself as one of Batumi’s main cultural venues. Major international artists, such as Sting, Chris Botti and Macy Grey have all performed from this unique stage. Many local artists also frequent the stage during the weekends, making it a popular spot for both locals and visitors to the city.
Piazza Square has become a must-see for any visitor, with its characteristic stained-glass windows made by Estonian artist Dolores Hoffman and exquisite mosaic imagery. The iconic clock tower stands tall over the square, making it a natural center of attention with its ornate details. Enjoy a taste of local Georgian refreshments while taking in the bustling life of the square from a seat at the many tables available.
