Lérins IslandsDiscover botanical wonders and the true story of the Man in the Iron Mask with a trip to the Lérins Islands. The largest island, Sainte-Marguerite, has a colorful history and is home to Fort Royal, a museum and 17th-century prison where the legendary Iron Mask was kept. Sainte-Marguerite Island is also known for its biodiversity and meticulous botanical trails. While on the island, you may spot rare species of migratory birds flying along the clear waters or nesting in the sea grass.
Saint-Honorat Island, the second largest island, is known for its community of Cistercian monks at Lérins Abbey that have lived on the island since the 5th century. The well-preserved feudal architecture is a rare sight, considered the finest of its kind in the Provence region. The monks have been growing vineyards on the island for centuries, so be sure to visit for a taste of their excellent wine, honey and famous Lérina liqueur.
