Chelyabinsk Regional Museum
The architecturally stunning Chelyabinsk Regional Museum is situated on the banks of the river Miass. The museum is described as a treasure trove of historical, cultural and spiritual heritage to this region of Russia.
The museum is in institution of over 90 years and home to over 300,000 artefacts, many with national significance. Three exhibition halls tell the story of the history of the South Urals including the precious stones, Ural aboriginals and the Orthodox religion. There is also a children’s museum, library, garden, exhibition centre and temporary exhibits. The museum has two viewing platforms and access to the Museum on the Roof. As well as the display, the roof offers great views over the city parks, streets, church domes and the mosque.
In 2013, Chelyabinsk was put on the world map due to an unfortunate event. The town was struck by a meteorite, which on entering the earth’s atmosphere shattered into millions of fragments. This had disastrous consequences for the city. Many buildings were damaged, windows smashed and worse, 1,600 people were injured. The largest fragment of the meteorite shower was located in a lake outside the city, weighing 600 kilos. Although society has moved on, there is a permanent reminder of what happened on the morning of 15th February that year in the Regional Museum.
Chelyabinsk Regional Museum offers various themed guided tours. Whether you want to find out more about the city folk and its history, the exhibition on the museum roof, about the meteorite and space, or about the Orthodox religion, the choice is yours. It is advisable to contact the museum in advance if you require English tours.
The Chelyabinsk Regional Museum is within easy walking distance from the Radisson Blu Hotel, Chelyabinsk and will provide you with a great insight into the history and folk of the surrounding region.
