Cologne's Christmas Markets

Visiting the Christmas markets in Cologne is a magical experience. Step into a winter wonderland of gold, glitter and snow-covered trees as you browse all the Christmas goods on sale. The city has 7 markets to choose from, making it the ideal destination for anyone looking for unique gifts or tasty seasonal treats.

Soak up the festive atmosphere

Cologne’s Christmas markets open at the end of November, after the first events of the annual carnival have taken place. They’re open right up until Christmas Eve. For the ultimate in festive tradition, visit Angel's Market, the city’s oldest, held on Neumarkt. This enchanting bundle of stalls is a great place to find locally produced, high-end arts and handmade crafts.

The largest Christmas market, Am Dom, takes place by the city’s cathedral and features 160 charming wooden pavilions selling toys, crafts and delicious German snacks. Children will adore the Market of Fairytales on Rudolfplatz, with its giant fairytale figures and traditional toys.

The Alter Markt: from mulled wine to ice skating

But perhaps not in that order! At the Alter Markt, sparkling lights twinkle and gnomes peek down at visitors from the top of each stall. This particular market takes place just in front of the Old Cologne Town Hall. Enjoy the festive fragrances and sip on some mulled wine as you walk around, and don’t miss the outdoor ice-rink. There’s plenty to entertain kids at this market too, with an old-fashioned merry-go-round and puppet theatre. Be sure to take the little ones to visit Santa Claus in his grotto!

The Christmas markets take place in the city center, close to the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cologne.
