The Jameson Experience
When in Ireland, and especially County Cork, a visit to the Jameson Experience is an absolute must. This is one of the county’s top attractions and the very heart of Jameson Whiskey, the world’s number one Irish whiskey. Just 15 minutes from the Radisson Blu Hotel & Spa, Cork, in the village of Midleton, you can marvel in the wonderful world of this liquid gold. Taking you on a journey from the 18th to the 21st century, skilled expert guides will lead you through the Jameson story and share their knowledge.
Whisky or Whiskey
What separates the Irish whiskey from the Scottish whisky is the way it has been distilled. Whilst the traditional scotch is twice distilled, whiskey from Ireland is distilled three times, creating a smoother and lighter flavour. This practice of distilling was something John Jameson insisted on when he established the distillery in Dublin in 1780, and his legacy has continued to this day.
The Jameson Experience Tour
A visit to the beautifully restored distillery in Midleton will most definitely change the way you look at and taste whiskey and is a truly unique experience. Some of its buildings date back to 1795, and they each have their own story. In the courtyard, you can picture the buzz of farmers waiting in line with horse-drawn carts filled to the brim with grain for the distillery. See the world’s largest pot still or the giant waterwheel, which used to power all the machinery and is still turning today.
All of the tours end with a complimentary taste of the whiskey, either straight or mixed with soda. In addition, eight lucky ones from each tour are selected for a comparison tasting of Irish, Scottish and American whiskey, discovering the difference between them. Should you want more in-depth knowledge, it is also possible to arrange a private tasting. Just ask at the reception when you arrive at the distillery and they will handle the rest.
