Giving an Arabic perspective on contemporary trends and themes in art, the Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art showcases Arabic art exhibitions and installations from Arabic artists as well as international art from global artists. The Sheikh’s private collectionMathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art was founded by Sheikh Hassan Mohammed bin Ali Al Thani in 2010, and is the only institution dedicated to Arab modern art in the Middle East and North Africa.
Sheikh Hassan is an artist, collector, researcher, and educator in Modern Art from the Arab world as well as India and Asia and has dedicated his life to Arab modern art. He started his private collection in 1986, which now counts more than 6,000 art pieces, mainly from Qatari, Lebanese, Egyptian, Syrian and Iraqi artists, and covers all phases of modern art in the Middle East from the 1840s to the present.
