History and plans of the Qatar National Museum and Aquarium
Built in the early 1900s, the original home of the Qatar National Museum and Aquarium first served as a family palace for Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani. Through the years, the palace began to decline phyisically till its restoration for the establishment of the Qatar National Museum and Aquarium. The restoration of the museum earned it the Agha Khan award for the refurbishment of Islamic architecture.
The new Qatar National Museum and Aquarium, scheduled for completion in 2014, currently has a US$400+ million pricetag, and looks to be a landmark of modern design in the Middle East. The new Qatar National Museum, designed by Jean Nouval, will join other ambassadors of Middle Eastern art in the area, inculding the Museum of Islamic Art and the Mathaf Arab Museum of Modern Art.
