The oldest city marathon in Germany, the Frankfurt Marathon started in 1981 and now attracts top-class athletes from all over the world. In 2010 alone, a record number of 12,475 people from 76 different countries entered the marathon.

Attending the Frankfurt Marathon
The marathon course is straightforward and fast, leading the runners through Frankfurt's city center, then into the Sachsenhausen district and onto Hoechst. The course then doubles back along the Mainzer Landstrasse and into the city center once more. For those competitors hardy enough to reach the end, the marathon has a red-carpet finish at the 'Festhalle' in the Trade Fair Tower.

The race has separate classifications for men and women, with the record for the men's event held by Kenyan Wilson Kipsang (2 hours 3 minutes 42 seconds), and the women's record was set by Ethiopia's Mamitu Daska (2 hours 21 minutes 59 seconds). Both records were set during the 2011 event.
