A celebration of culture with Galway’s Festivals
Galway City is one of Ireland’s most cultural spots, which is easily seen by the huge list of annual festivals and events taking place. Whether you are interested in music, comedy, art, food, sports or simply soaking up the local atmosphere and culture, Galway has its pick of events.
Glam up for Galway Races
Perhaps the largest event on the annual calendar is Galway Races, Ireland’s largest horse racing festival. Taking place in July, this week-long event is the ultimate in glamour, sport and fun with themed celebrations including Mad Hatters Day, Family Day and Ladies Day.
Embrace world cinema at Film Fleadh
Bringing world cinema to Galway each July is the Film Fleadh Festival. This event showcases the best of Ireland’s film industry and welcomes international guests including directors, actors and cinematographers to its shores. Not least, you will find a packed programme of world premiers and the year’s top films hitting the market, as well as some older much-loved classics.
Get Arty at GIAF
Galway’s cultural heritage is supported by its love for the arts and what better place to see this than at Galway International Art Festival (GIAF). Another summer event, it also takes place in July, when the streets and venues across the city are packed with shows and performances. These shows cross genres from exhibitions and theatre to music, comedy and street performances.
Sample the Irish kitchen at the Oyster Festival
For something a little different, check out Galway Oyster Festival in September. It is, in fact, the world’s longest running oyster festival and has been taking place for over 60 years. This event not only presents world-class seafood at its best, it is a chance to get competitive if you fancy your chances at oyster shucking, or want to take part in cooking talks, demos and tasting events.
This is just an introduction to the type of festivals and events you can expect when visiting Galway. Others include exploring the Irish kitchen, trail running marathons, literature events and much more. Ask our staff at the Radisson Blu Hotel & Spa, Galway for more information on what’s on when you are visiting and you’ll be sure to enjoy the Irish craic.
