Shopping in Glasgow
Not only does Glasgow offer a fantastic cultural experience, it is also home to the best shopping in Scotland, making it the ideal destination for a city break. The highlights of shopping in Glasgow are all found in the city centre in an area known as ‘The Style Mile’.
The Style Mile
The Style Mile is a square mile of buildings in the heart of the centre of Glasgow, comprising of shops, cafes, restaurants and clubs. It is said to be the largest concentration of shops in the UK outside of London. Home to high street stores, international fashion labels and independent boutiques, the Style Mile has something for everyone. The Style Mile includes Buchanan Galleries, St Enoch Centre and Princes Square shopping centres, and Sauchiehall Street, Buchanan Street and Argyle Street.
As part of a major redevelopment of Glasgow city centre, Buchanan Galleries was built. Buchanan Galleries is found at the top of Buchanan Street adjacent to Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and houses over 80 shops, many of which are well known high street names. The largest tenant is John Lewis department store.
For a different shopping experience, Glasgow’s West end offers a more bohemian alternative to shopping with independently owned boutiques, second hand and specialist shops and handicrafts.
The Barrowland Market, known locally as ‘the Barras’, is a fifteen minute walk from the city centre. The Barrorwland Market is open every weekend from 10:00-15:00. Pick up a bargain at the market stalls, selling everything from handicrafts and flowers to antiques. Stop for a freshly made pancake or doughnut at one of the delightful food stalls in between shopping.
