The Gothenburg Opera can be found right in the city center, at Lilla Bommen harbor, along with the Art Museum and it is one of the major cultural destinations in the city. The beautiful building was only built in 1994, so it boasts state-of-the-art features which make performances here very special. As a visitor to this stunning opera house you can enjoy musicals, the ballet and, of course, world class opera shows.
A range of showsThe main auditorium was built in classical style, complete with stalls and balconies and an orchestra pit which can hold up to 100 musicians. You will be amazed by the scale of it and impressed by its excellent acoustics, which make it perfect for the grandest of productions. Every year, 250,000 people visit the Gothenburg Opera to take in one of the 270 different shows that are held there.
Artistic insightsTo get a thorough appreciation for the building, join a guided tour, taking you behind the scenes and pointing out all its best features. Before the shows you can also attend one of the popular introductions, and take the opportunity to learn more about the performance and get more in-depth insight into the story and background of the show you are watching. These take place on the Small Stage or in the Opera Bar an hour before opera and dance performances. They last for about 30 minutes and do not cost anything extra.
Beautiful inside and outThere is as much to see just outside the opera house as there is inside. The views over the harbor are fantastic and even inspired Jan Izikowitz, the architect who designed the building. Keep your eyes open for the shapes of ships, hulls, bridges and harbor cranes in the building.
After the show you can get something to eat or drink at the opera’s own café or bar, or choose to return to the stylish Atrium Bar & Restaurant at the Radisson Blu Scandinavia hotel, Gothenburg. With modern, stylish rooms to relax upstairs, there’s no better place for you to stay during your visit to this charming city.
