Alternative Hamburg Tours

Hamburg is one of Europe’s most unique cities, with creative and colorful districts such as St. Pauli, Sternschanze an Karolinenviertel. However, some of the most interesting sites can’t be found in modern day guidebooks and that’s where the concept of Alternative Hamburg comes into play. Established in 2014 after witnessing the success of similar concepts in London and Berlin, the company shows off the alternative side of Hamburg not found on the map, exploring it through walking tours and workshops.

Street Art, squats and creative hubs

The original tour offered by the company is the Alternative Hamburg Tour. Lasting around two hours, the journey through the urban heart of Hamburg will showcase street art and graffiti made by local and international street artists and explore creative hubs focused on diversity and equality. The fight against gentrification has led to many ideas and projects, like squatted buildings, re-purposed bunkers, green initiatives and a strong community spirit, all of which will reveal itself during the tour.

Combined tours and workshops

For those looking to flex their creative muscle, Alternative Hamburg also offers combined tours and workshops. On these visitors can learn the skills required to produce stunning pieces of street art, before creating their own urban masterpieces. The tours operate on a pay-what-you-like basis, offering a glimpse of the hidden Hamburg to everyone regardless of their budget. Tours start near the Sternschanze S-Bahn Station and journey through the Schanzenviertel and St. Pauli districts before heading back towards the city center near Gänsemarkt U-Bahn station.

For beer connoisseurs there is also a Craft Beer Tour available, showing you the city’s local craft beer scene and allowing you to taste the best of the best that Hamburg has in store.
