Speicherstadt Warehouse District

Speicherstadt, literally means ‘City of Warehouses’ and is located in the Freihafen harbor. This is quite an apt description as it is actually the world’s largest warehouse district, and quite an impressive sight. Building work began in the late 19th century and was completed in the early 1900s. The area consists of 17 warehouses in rows separated by canals, each of which are seven or eight stories high.

On boot or by boat

There are two great ways to explore the area. To really appreciate the grandeur and the history involved, it is recommended to see it all from water by taking a boat tour. Learn about the importance of the city’s canals, the harbor and the role these warehouses used to play for the city. A boat trip lets you get up close and personal to the beautiful structures. The other way is to stroll on foot and explore the dark red brick buildings, which all have been immaculately restored in recent years. Many of these are now functioning offices or residential accommodation and you can also find boutiques, shops, restaurants and coffee houses hidden within the complex.

UNESCO World Heritage Site

Speicherstadt, together with Chilehaus and the Kontorhaus District has been given the impressive accolade as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has been recognized as a great example of an urban development in Germany in the early 20th century. It was also one of the first dedicated office districts on the European continent, with great success. Right next to Speicherstadt, the new inner-city district of HafenCity is being built, a very ambitious project with countless business premises and over 7000 residential units.

The port city

It is hard to visit Hamburg and overlook the importance of the port. It is the third busiest port in Europe and plays a significant role for the entire city. A large part of the city’s history is centralized around Speicherstadt and the harbor, both of which are worth exploring either by boat or foot and can be easily reached from the Radisson Blu Hotel in Hamburg.
