Wacken Open-Air Rock Festival

Germany has a love for metal music and nowhere is this more evident than at Wacken Open Air Festival. Located in the small town of Wacken, situated approximately 50km outside of Hamburg, its population swells from around 1,790 to over 80,000 in early August in a celebration of everything metal. This event is one of the largest of its kind in the world. It attracts fans from across the globe. Wacken Open Air is a celebration of the complete spectrum of metal music including hard rock and black, death, power, thrash, gothic, folk metal and more. The quiet fields in the tranquil village are transformed into a festival site as locals welcome thousands of revelers.

The festival was established in 1990 and has been running for over 20 years. It has emerged from a small event featuring a few local bands to one of the largest music festivals in Europe, attracting major artists and bands from the heavy metal scene. Today, the event runs over the whole weekend featuring back-to-back performances but some of the world’s biggest metal legends. This is a sell out event so make sure you secure your tickets early.
