Wacken Open-Air Rock Festival
Germany has a love for metal music and nowhere is this more evident than at Wacken Open Air Festival. Located in the small town of Wacken, situated approximately 50 km outside of Hamburg, its population swells from around 1,790 to over 80,000 in early August in a celebration of everything metal. This event is one of the largest of its kind and attracts fans from all across the globe. Wacken Open Air is a celebration of the complete spectrum of metal music including hard rock and black, death, power, thrash, gothic, folk metal and more. The quiet fields in the tranquil village are transformed into a festival site as locals welcome thousands of revelers.
International heavy metal superstars aboundThe festival was established in 1990 and has been running for over 20 years. It has emerged from a small event featuring a few local bands to one of the largest music festivals in Europe, attracting major artists and bands from the heavy metal scene. Today, the event runs over the whole weekend featuring back-to-back performances from some of the world’s biggest metal legends. This is a sell-out event so make sure you secure your tickets early.
A new editionBecause of its immense popularity a new event has been added to the family. In February, avid fans will be able to see their favorite bands and performers during Wacken Winter Nights. An exciting mix of music and arts, campfire and winter magic makes this a great festival for all. When it comes to genres, this is not a purebred metal event as you will be able to see and hear medieval rock, mystic folk, pagan and symphonic metal.
Hamburg Metal DayzIf you miss out on tickets or want a taste of Germany’s metal industry on a smaller scale, Hamburg Metal Dayz takes place in September, during the Reeperbahn Festival. Highlights of the event include heavy metal concerts, readings, meet and greets with artists and others in the industry and workshops for musicians. If you want to meet with like-minded fans then this is the place to do it.
