Formerly known as Sandton Square, Nelson Mandela Square offers Johannesburg's most exclusive shopping. Adjoining the Sandton City Mall, the square is characterized by a six-meter tall statue of its namesake, the former South African president Nelson Mandela. The Nelson Mandela statueInspired by European piazzas, the square sets itself apart with the huge statue of Nelson Mandela at its heart. The statue, designed by South African artists Kobus Hattingh and Jacob Maponyane, weighs 2.5 tones and measures 2.3 meters across. The statue was unveiled in 2004 to mark the 10th anniversary of the shopping complex, when the square’s name was officially changed from Sandton Square to Nelson Mandela Square.
