Nelson Mandela Square
Formerly known as Sandton Square, Nelson Mandela Square forms the heart of Johannesburg's most stylish shopping attractions. Adjoining Sandton City Mall, the square is characterised by a six-metre statue of its namesake, former South African president Nelson Mandela.
The Radisson Blu Hotel Sandton, Johannesburg is a short drive from Nelson Mandela Square. Situated in Johannesburg's wealthiest area, this Sandton hotel offers the ideal location for visitors on shopping breaks in the city.
Shopping in Nelson Mandela Square
Nelson Mandela Square features a wide range of designer stores, exclusive boutiques and international eateries. From traditional African fare to delicious Greek cuisine and many an Italian coffeehouse, Nelson Mandela Square is the premier place to be seen in Johannesburg. Moreover, the square - which measures 1,000 square metres - often plays host to prestigious international and local events.
Inspired by European piazzas, the square sets itself apart with the huge statue of Nelson Mandela at its heart. The statue, designed by South African artists Kobus Hattingh and Jacob Maponyane, weighs 2.5 tonnes and measures 2.3 metres across. It was unveiled in 2004 to mark the 10th anniversary of the shopping complex, and marked its name change from Sandton Square to Nelson Mandela Square.
