Curonian Spit National Park
History of the Curonian Spit
While the area contained in the Curonian Spit National Park has yet to be fully excavated, historians believe the site was formerly a major trading centre. Over time, the Curonian Spit came under the control of Germany, Prussia and the Soviet Union. The Prussians reintroduced trees into the Curonian Spit National Park, meaning visitors can find plenty of forested areas in addition to beaches and dunes.
The Curonian Spit's beaches have made the national park a big attraction for tourists in the high season, as there's plenty of sand, sunshine and the refreshing waters of the Baltic. Hikes through the dunes or the forests of the Curonian Spit National Park make the site a fully-fledged holiday destination.
