Although the exact date of construction is uncertain, the beginnings of the Church of St. Nicholas Prytysk can be attributed to a Kiev merchant known as Zaliznyi Grish - or the "Iron Grosh." Built in replacement of an old wooden church that inhabited the site, the building of the brick temple in honor of St. Nicholas was funded by the merchant.
With a long and eventful history, the Church of St. Nicholas Prytysk has been renovated several times throughout its life, with the last extensive restoration taking place in the 1990s. The green domed roof of the church stands out in Podil's Maidanchyk Square, making it a favorite architectural sight for visitors to Kiev.
