Discovering Bras d’Eau National Park

Bras d’Eau National Park is located on the island’s east coast near Radisson Blu Poste Lafayette Resort & Spa, Mauritius. It’s the perfect spot to discover Bras d’Eau Beach, which was shaped by volcanic lava. At the turn of the 20th century, many exotic species were planted and can be seen today, such as eucalyptus, mahogany and blackwood. There is also a mango and litchi orchard. In the park’s forests look out for the native flycatcher and several other bird species, fruit bats, mongoose and other wildlife. The visitor center offers a fantastic insight into the park, and just behind it are the remains of a sugar mill.

Black River Gorge National Park

This lush national park was established in 1994 and is located on the south-west side of Mauritius. Well-marked hiking paths stretching up to 60km lead you through Black River Gorge National Park. You decide how long a walk you wish to take. Start at one of the two visitor centers to get information about its history and what flora and fauna you should look out for. Here you will find over 300 plant and tree species as well as flying foxes, kestrels, wild pigs, deer and even butterflies.

Trou aux Cerfs

Mauritius is a volcanic island, and Trou aux Cerfs is the perfect place to see this first hand. This dormant volcanic crater reaches almost 100m deep and is 1km in circumference. The basin is decorated with woodland and the surrounding area is rich in grassy habitation, decorated with benches so you can sit back, relax and enjoy the view. For the ultimate experience, take a trip there at sunset and enjoy the magical experience.
