Sofia Green Tour

Sofia is one of Europe's most compact and easily navigable cities. The streets are punctuated with Soviet-era monuments, domed-church roofs and modern shopping malls and offices. Going on a cycling tour is a great way to explore the historic city parks and monuments in the Bulgarian capital.

The Radisson Blu Grand Hotel Sofia provides the perfect base for travellers in the city centre close to the start of the Sofia Green Tour. The tour is free of charge if you have your own bike or you can rent one for five Euro which includes a free bottle of water and health insurance.

Things to see on the bike tour
The Sofia Green Tour (http://www.sofiagreentour.com/) runs twice a day at 11am and 5pm from April to November. No booking is needed unless you are in a large group; just show up and spend 2-3 hours biking around the city. And best of all the route is classed as 'very easy' as much of the city is extremely flat. On the tour you'll learn about the Bulgarian's way of life, their history and about the development of Sofia as a Green City.

The morning tour lasts for three hours and starts from the Ivan Vazov National Theatre. This beautiful early 20th century building has been faithfully reconstructed after it was damaged during WWW II. The tour takes you through a number of the cities green spaces including Borisova Gradina, Loven, King's Palace and Uzhen parks. Look out for the onion-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, one of the most recognisable and popular tourist attractions in Sofia.

The afternoon tour takes just two hours to complete following a slightly shorter circuit of the main sights. Starting again at the National Theatre the route passes many points of interest including the National Stadium, Soviet Army relics and Boris Park. The park was designed by a Swiss gardener and includes a famous lake of lilies sent from Japan as a symbol of friendship between the two nations.
